sound / off: an evening of poetry

Guggenheim Poet-in-Residence, Meg Day, welcomes the audience to Sound/Off on December 11, 2024.

deaf & hard-of-hearing poets perform in asl, bsl, & english

This special evening program celebrated the artistry of poetry: written, spoken, and signed. In Sound/Off, Deaf and hard-of-hearing poets writing in English joined Deaf and hard-of-hearing poets making poems in American and British Sign Language on stage in the Guggenheim’s iconic rotunda to honor the richness and malleability of language in different hands and on different tongues. Conceived of by Day, readers and performers included Raymond Antrobus, Noah Buchholz, Abby Haroun, Camisha Jones, Raymond Luczak, and Sam Rush.

hands & Minds: deaf & hard-of-hearing poet summit luncheon

Preceding the evening event, Day hosted a roundtable summit on the state of Deaf and hard-of-hearing poetics at the Wright Restaurant. Poets shared their diverse experiences of trying to expand and adapt to the demands of publishing and performance, despite the lag in access from American poetics at large. Access included CART, Certified Deaf Interpreters, and ASL interpreters.
